Kamchatkan and Northern Kurile Volcanic Activity
INFORMATION RELEASE 42-05
Friday, July 29, 2005, 11:50 KDT (22:50 UTC on July 28)

SUMMARY OF LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODES:

KAMCHATKA:
SHEVELUCH and KARYMSKY : ORANGE
KLYUCHEVSKOY and BEZYMIANNY: YELLOW
TOLBACHIK PLOSKY, KIZIMEN, AVACHINSKY, KORYAKSKY, MUTNOVSKY and GORELY: GREEN

NORTHERN KURILE:
EBEKO: YELLOW
CHIKURACHKI and ALAID: GREEN

CURRENT CHANGES IN COLOR CODE:
KLYUCHEVSKOY IS NOW AT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE: YELLOW
EBEKO IS NOW AT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE: YELLOW

KLYUCHEVSKOY VOLCANO: 56°03'N, 160°39'E; Elevation 4,750 m
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS YELLOW
PREVIOUS LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE WAS ORANGE
Based on the seismic data, possibility of ash explosions as high as 6 km (or 23,000 ft ) ASL remains with little or no warning.

Seismic activity was above background levels. Volcanic tremor decreased in the end of this week. According to visual data by volcanologists, weak ash-gas plume rose about 100 m above the crater (4850 m or 15,910 ft. ASL) at 22:20 UTC on July 22.

EBEKO VOLCANO, Paramushir Island, Northern Kurile: 50°41'N, 156°01'E Elevation 1,156 m
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS YELLOW
PREVIOUS LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE WAS GREEN

Activity of the volcano increases. Ebeko volcano is not monitored with seismic instruments. KVERT has satellite monitoring and occasional visual messages about this volcano. The danger of sudden ash explosions as high as 3 km (9,840 ft.) ASL as well as ash falls at Severo-Kurilsk, exists.

According to the data by local observers at Severo-Kurilsk, activity on the volcano increases. New fumaroles were noted on the Active crater. There was new explosion crater with hot steam from the bottom. This strong changes in Active crater didn`t observed from 1982.

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO: 56°38'N, 161°19'E; Elevation 3,283 m,
the dome elevation ~2,500 m.
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS ORANGE.

Growth of the lava dome continues. At any time explosions could produce ash plumes that rise as high as 7,5 km (or 25,000 ft.) ASL, as well as localized ash fall and hot avalanches. The nearest seismic station from the volcano was destroyed by the eruption of February 28, 2005.

A persistent thermal anomaly and luminescence from the dome on July 23 were registered this week.

KARYMSKY VOLCANO: 54°03'N, 159°27'E; Elevation 1,486 m.
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS ORANGE.

Seismic activity is above background levels. The danger of a sudden explosion or series of explosions of ash up to 4 km (or 16,500 ft.) ASL, as well as localized ash fall and hot avalanches, exists.

According to seismic data, possible ash-gas plumes up to 2,5-3,0 km (or 8,200 - 9,800 ft.) ASL were registered this week. Weak thermal anomaly and short ash-gas plume extending to the east was registered on July 22.

BEZYMIANNY VOLCANO: 55°58'N, 160°36'E; Elevation 2,895 m
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS YELLOW.

The volcanological field research and development on July 2005 show that unrest at the volcano continues.

Two new craters at the summit of the lava dome were noted from a helicopter on July 27. Moderate gas-steam activity from the lava dome, frequent hot avalanches and weak thermal anomaly were registered.

The Kamchatkan Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) is a non-commercial cooperative program of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO, USA), the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS and the Kamchatkan Experimental and Methodical Seismological Department(KEMSD) GS RAS (Russia). KVERT staff is available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST or KDT) and by phone during the evenings. KVERT uses daily satellite imagery, information from remote scientific observation stations, real-time seismic data for 10 volcanoes, and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kurile Volcanoes.
