PREVIOUS LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE:  RED

Activity of the volcano decreased.

According to seismic data, at 10:59 UTC on September 22, was at the most strong seismic
signal of this eruption. A boom of this event was heard at 9 km from the lava dome. A
separately shallow seismic signals were registered from 11:30 till 24:00 UTC on September
22. These events indicated possible ash plumes up to 3.5 km (11,500 ft.) ASL. According to
satellite data by Russia, ash cloud with a diameter of ~15 km was located in ~20 km to the
south-southeast from the volcano on a height about 3 km (9,800 ft.) ASL. According to
visual data by seismologists, the run-out of new pyroclastic flow is 10-15 km.

The Kamchatkan Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) is a non-commercial cooperative
program of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO, USA), the Institute of Volcanology and
Seismology (IVS) FED RAS and the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Service(KB GS) RAS
(Russia). KVERT staff is available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST or KDT)
and by phone during the evenings. KVERT uses daily satellite imagery, information from
remote scientific observation stations, real-time seismic data for 10 volcanoes, and other
information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kurile Volcanoes.
