SPECIAL NOTICE:
From May 06, AVO will no longer relay email information releases
from KVERT. Information regarding Kamchatkan volcano activity is sent

Kamchatkan and Northern Kurile Volcanic Activity
INFORMATION RELEASE 57-05
Friday, October 28, 2005, 11:15 KDT (22:15 UTC on October 27)

SUMMARY OF LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODES:

KAMCHATKA:
SHEVELUCH and KARYMSKY : ORANGE
KLYUCHEVSKOY and BEZYMIANNY: YELLOW
TOLBACHIK PLOSKY, KIZIMEN, AVACHINSKY, KORYAKSKY, MUTNOVSKY and GORELY: GREEN

NORTHERN KURILE:
EBEKO: YELLOW
CHIKURACHKI and ALAID: GREEN

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO: 56°38'N, 161°19'E; Elevation 3,283 m,
the dome elevation ~2,500 m.
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS ORANGE.

Seismic activity of the volcano and the growth of the lava dome continue. At any time explosions could produce ash plumes that rise as high as 7 km (or 25,000 ft.) ASL.

Weak shallow earthquakes, incandesces at the lava dome on October 22 and 24, hot avalanches, small fumarolic activity and thermal anomaly over the lava dome were registered this week. A weak ash-gas plume extending to the east from the volcano was observed on October 22.

KARYMSKY VOLCANO: 54°03'N, 159°27'E; Elevation 1,486 m.
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS ORANGE.

Seismicity was above background levels this week. The lava dome locates into the volcanic crater and a possibility of ash explosions up to 6 km (or 26,300 ft.) ASL exists.

According to seismic data, possibly five ash-gas plumes up to 2.5-3.5 km (8,200-11,500 ft.) ASL were registered on October 21-22, 24 and 26. A thermal anomaly was noted over the volcano.

KLYUCHEVSKOY VOLCANO: 56°03'N, 160°39'E; Elevation 4,750 m
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS YELLOW.

Seismic activity of the volcano continues. Possibility of ash explosions up to 5 km (16,500 ft.) ASL exists.

Earthquakes, weak volcanic tremor and gas-steam activity were registered this week.

BEZYMIANNY VOLCANO: 55°58'N, 160°36'E; Elevation 2,895 m
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS YELLOW.

Unrest of the volcano continues. Gas-steam activity and thermal anomaly at the lava dome were registered this week.

EBEKO VOLCANO, Paramushir Island, Northern Kurile: 50°41'N, 156°01'E Elevation 1,156 m
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS YELLOW.

Ebeko volcano is not monitored with seismic instruments. KVERT has satellite monitoring and occasional visual observations about this volcano. Moderate fumarolic activity of the volcano continues. The danger of sudden ash explosions up to 3 km (9,840 ft.) ASL as well as ash falls at Severo-Kurilsk exists.

The Kamchatkan Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) is a non-commercial cooperative program of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO, USA), the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS and the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Service(KB GS) RAS (Russia). KVERT staff is available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST or KDT) and by phone during the evenings. KVERT uses daily satellite imagery, information from remote scientific observation stations, real-time seismic data for 10 volcanoes, and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kurile Volcanoes.
