Kamchatkan and Northern Kurile Volcanic Activity
INFORMATION RELEASE 58-05
Thursday, November 03, 2005, 11:30 KST (23:30 UTC on November 02)

SUMMARY OF LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODES:

KAMCHATKA:
KARYMSKY : ORANGE
SHEVELUCH and BEZYMIANNY: YELLOW
KLYUCHEVSKOY, TOLBACHIK PLOSKY, KIZIMEN, AVACHINSKY, KORYAKSKY, MUTNOVSKY and GORELY: GREEN

NORTHERN KURILE:
EBEKO: YELLOW
CHIKURACHKI and ALAID: GREEN

CURRENT CHANGES IN COLOR CODE:
SHEVELUCH IS NOW AT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE: YELLOW
KLYUCHEVSKOY IS NOW AT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE: GREEN

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO: 56°38'N, 161°19'E; Elevation 3,283 m,
the dome elevation ~2,500 m.
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS YELLOW.
PREVIOUS LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE WAS ORANGE.

Seismic activity of the volcano and the growth of the lava dome continue. Installation of new three seismic stations at Sheveluch volcano allows to carry out a correct seismic monitoring of this volcano. Seismic activity decreased gradually during two weeks and only weak avalanches were registered during this week. However possibility of ash explosions up to 6 km (19,600 ft.) ASL still exists.

Weak shallow earthquakes, incandesces at the lava dome on October 29, fumarolic activity and thermal anomaly over the lava dome were registered this week.

KLYUCHEVSKOY VOLCANO: 56°03'N, 160°39'E; Elevation 4,750 m
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS GREEN.
PREVIOUS LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE WAS YELLOW.

Seismic activity of the volcano was at background levels during last three weeks and no activity was detected in satellite images long time. There are no indications that an eruption is imminent.

Earthquakes, weak volcanic tremor and gas-steam activity were registered this week.

KARYMSKY VOLCANO: 54°03'N, 159°27'E; Elevation 1,486 m.
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS ORANGE.

Seismicity was above background levels this week. The growth of the lava dome into the volcanic crater continues and a possibility of ash explosions up to 6 km (or 26,300 ft.) ASL exists.

According to seismic data, possibly three gas-steam plumes with some amount of ash up to 3.0-3.8 km (9,800-12,500 ft.) ASL were registered on October 29-31 and November 01. According to satellite data, ash plumes extending to the north-east from the volcano were observed on October 31 and November 02. A thermal anomaly was noted over the volcano.

BEZYMIANNY VOLCANO: 55°58'N, 160°36'E; Elevation 2,895 m
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS YELLOW.

Unrest of the volcano continues. Gas-steam activity and thermal anomaly at the lava dome were registered this week.

EBEKO VOLCANO, Paramushir Island, Northern Kurile: 50°41'N, 156°01'E Elevation 1,156 m
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS YELLOW.

Ebeko volcano is not monitored with seismic instruments. KVERT has satellite monitoring and occasional visual observations about this volcano. Moderate fumarolic activity of the volcano continues. The danger of sudden ash explosions up to 3 km (9,840 ft.) ASL as well as ash falls at Severo-Kurilsk exists.

The Kamchatkan Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) is a non-commercial cooperative program of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO, USA), the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS and the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Service(KB GS) RAS (Russia). KVERT staff is available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST or KDT) and by phone during the evenings. KVERT uses daily satellite imagery, information from remote scientific observation stations, real-time seismic data for 10 volcanoes, and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kurile Volcanoes.
