KVERT INFORMATION RELEASE 28-07
Monday, June 25, 2007, 02:15 UTC (15:15 KDT)

KLYUCHEVSKOY VOLCANO; 56°03'N, 160°39'E; Elevation 4,750 m
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS ORANGE
PREVIOUS LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE: RED

The explosive-effusive eruption of Klyuchevskoy continues but activity has decreased slightly in intensity of events. Ash explosions up to 8 km (26,250 ft.) ASL are still possible. The activity of the volcano could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

Seismic activity has decreased to medium level on June 22 and remains to this level till June 24. According to satellite data, ash plumes extended for about 120-400 km (75-245 mi) to different directions from the volcano all week. The approximate altitudes of plumes estimated on atmospheric profiles decreased and made up 5.5-6.5 km (17,600-21,300 ft.). A thermal anomaly was noted all days.

The Kamchatkan Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) is a non-commercial cooperative program of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO, USA), the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS and the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey (KB GS) RAS (Russia). KVERT staff is available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST or KDT) and by phone during the evenings. KVERT uses daily satellite imagery, information from remote scientific observation stations, real-time seismic data for 10 volcanoes, and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanoes.
