Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity
KVERT INFORMATION RELEASE 32-07
Wednesday, July 04, 2007, 01:00 UTC (14:00 KDT)

CURRENT CHANGES IN COLOR CODE:
KLYUCHEVSKOY IS NOW AT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE ORANGE

KLYUCHEVSKOY VOLCANO; 56°03'N, 160°39'E; Elevation 4,750 m
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS ORANGE
PREVIOUS LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS RED

The explosive-effusive eruption of Klyuchevskoy continues but activity has decreased. Ash explosions up to 8 km (26,250 ft.) ASL are still possible. The activity of the volcano could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

Seismic activity of Klyuchevskoy decreased to low level at 13 h 20 min UTC on July 03 and remains at this level till present time 23 h 30 min UTC, July 03. This low amplitude of volcanic tremor can correspond only weak ash plumes at Klyuchevskoy volcano, possible height of these ash plumes is up to 6-7 km ASL. Seismic activity of Klyuchevskoy is decreasing generally from June 28.
According to satellite data, ash plumes extended for about 80-140 km (or 50-86 mi) to NNW, WEST and SE from the volcano July 02-03. Approximate plume altitude: 5600-6000 m (17,900-19,200 ft) ASL (by atmospheric profile). Clouds obscured the volcano on July 02-03.

The Kamchatkan Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) is a non-commercial cooperative program of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO, USA), the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS and the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey (KB GS) RAS (Russia). KVERT staff is available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST or KDT) and by phone during the evenings. KVERT uses daily satellite imagery, information from remote scientific observation stations, real-time seismic data for 10 volcanoes, and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanoes.
