Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity
KVERT INFORMATION RELEASE 23-09
Sunday, April 26, 2009, 21:25 UTC (Monday, April 27, 10:25 KDT)

SUMMARY OF LEVEL OF  CONCERN COLOR CODES:

KAMCHATKA:
SHEVELUCH: RED

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO: 56°38'N, 161°19'E; Elevation 3,283 m, the dome  elevation ~2,500 m
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS  RED

Seismic activity of the volcano slightly decreased but continues to remain on a high levels. A continuous spasmodic volcanic tremor and series of weak shallow events continue to registering at volcano at present.

According to video data, to video data, moderate ash explosions continue to occur at the lava dome of the volcano. Ash continuously appear from a big fissure on the lava dome southern flank. Ash plumes extend to the east-north-east from the volcano on the height about 4 km ASL.

According to satellite images, an ash plume extended to the ENE at 19:26 UTC on April 26. A big stripe of meteorological clouds obscured the northern area from Sheveluch volcano and probably a part of ash plumes too.

Possibly an activity of the volcano will increase and ash explosions > 10 km (> 32,800 ft) ASL could occur. The activity of the volcano could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

The Kamchatkan Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) is a non-commercial cooperative program of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO, USA),  the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS and the Kamchatkan  Branch of Geophysical Survey (KB GS) RAS (Russia). KVERT staff is available in  the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST or KDT) and by phone during the  evenings. KVERT uses daily satellite imagery, information from remote scientific  observation stations, real-time seismic data for 10 volcanoes, and other  information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles  Volcanoes.
