Explosive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions >7.0 km (>23,000 ft) ASL could occur at any time. The activity of the volcano could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

Seismicity of the volcano was above background levels all week. According to visual data, Strombolian activity was observed on September 23, 25 and 28-29. Ash plumes rose up to 6.5-7.0 km (21,300-23,000 ft) ASL on September 22 and 24. A lava flow continues to effused from the summit crater down the south-western flank of the volcano. According to satellite data, a big bright thermal anomaly was registered over the volcano all week. Ash plumes extended about 185 km (115 mi) to the eastern directions from the volcano on September 22 and 28, and about 78 km (48 mi) to the western directions from the volcano on September 24-25.

Explosive-extrusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash  explosions > 10 km (> 32,800 ft) ASL could occur at any time. The activity of the volcano could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

Seismicity was above background levels last week, and according to seismic data, moderate ash plumes occurred all week. According to visual data, strong and moderate gas-steam plumes were observed on September 23, 25 and 28-29; clouds obscured the volcano on the other days of week. According to satellite data, a thermal anomaly was registered over the lava dome all week. Gas-steam plumes extended about 70 km (43 mi) to the south-east from the volcano on September 29.

KARYMSKY VOLCANO: 54°03'N, 159°27'E; Elevation 1,486 m

Explosive activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions > 6.0 km (> 19,700 ft) ASL could occur at any time. Aactivity of the volcano could affect low-flying aircraft.

Seismic was above background levels on September 25-29 and at background levels on September 22-24. According to seismic data, possibly weak ash explosions occurred at the volcano on September 25-29, and ash plumes rose up to 3.0-4.5 km (9,840-14,760 ft) on September 25-27. According to satellite data, a thermal anomaly was registered over the volcano on September 23, 25 and 28. Ash plumes extended about 83 km (115 mi) to the south-east from the volcano on September 28. Clouds obscured the volcano on the other days of week.

Activity of the volcano is increasing. Probably an eruption of Gorely is preparing. Aerosol plumes from the volcano could affect low-flying aircraft.

Seismicity of the volcano was above background levels all week, volcanic tremor continues to be recorded. According to visual data, weak and moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano was observed on September 26-29; clouds obscured the volcano on the other days of week. According to satellite data, a thermal anomaly was registered over the volcano on September 28.

BEZYMIANNY VOLCANO: 55°58'N, 160°36'E; Elevation 2,895 m

Grows of the lava dome of the volcano continues and aerosol plumes could affect low-flying aircraft.

Strong volcanic activity of Klyuchevskoy volcano obscured seismic data of Bezymianny all week. According to visual data, moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano was observed on September 28-29. Clouds obscured the volcano on the other days of week. According to satellite data, a weak thermal anomaly was registered over the lava dome on September 23 and 28-29, clouds obscured the volcano on the other days of week.

The Kamchatkan Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) is a non-commercial cooperative program of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO, USA), the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS and the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey (KB GS) RAS (Russia). KVERT staff is available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST or KDT) and by phone during the evenings. KVERT uses daily satellite imagery, information from remote scientific observation stations, real-time seismic data for 10 volcanoes, and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanoes.
