KVERT Scientists Examined Satellite Information Each Day to Look for Evidence of Volcanic Unrest since 2002. Not All of These Volcanoes Had Eruptions in Historical Time, However They Are Potentially Active and Therefore Are of Concern to Aviation.

KIZIMEN VOLCANO (1000-23)
55°08'N, 160°19'E; Elevation 8,151 ft (2,485 m)

Moderate explosive eruption of the volcano continues. Strong ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) ASL could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

Seismic activity was above background levels on May 05 and 11, there was not seismic data due to technical reasons on the other days of week. According to visual data, ash falls occurred at Milkovo village (74.4 mi to the south-west from the volcano) on May 10. A thickness of an ash layer was about 0.5-1.0 mm. A bright thermal anomaly was registering over the volcano all week at satellite images. Ash plumes extended about 28 mi (45 km) to the south-east from the volcano and gas-steam plumes - about 36.5 (59 km) to the north on May 06-07.

History of Kizimen eruptions is unknown. We have incomplete data about only one eruption in 1928-1929 which were likely moderate explosive (or explosive-effusive) events. Tephrachronological data point out several catastrophic eruptions in evolution of this volcano.

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO (1000-27)
56°38'N, 161°19'E; Elevation 3,283 m, the dome elevation ~8,200 ft (~2,500 m)

Explosive-extrusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) ASL could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

Seismicity of the volcano continues, and according to seismic data, possible ash plume rose up to 12,800 ft (3.9 km) ASL on May 05-07. According to visual data, ash plumes rose up to 24,600 ft (7.5 km) ASL on May 07 and about 9,800-13,100 ft (3-4 km) ASL on May 05-06 and 08. According to satellite data, ash plumes extended about 122 mi (196 km) to the north from the volcano on May 05-06. Small ash clouds extended to the south and south-east and gas-steam plumes transferred about 143 mi (230 km) to the east from the volcano on May 07. A thermal anomaly was registered over the lava dome on May 07-08.

KARYMSKY VOLCANO (1000-13)

Explosive activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) ASL could occur at any time. Activity of the volcano could affect low-flying aircraft.

Moderate seismic activity of the volcano continues, possible ash plumes rose up to 19,700 ft (6 km) ASL on May 10, and up to 13,800 ft (4.2 km) ASL on the other days of week. According to the pilots report, ash plume rose up to 9,800 ft (3 km) ASL on May 06. According to satellite data, ash plumes extended about 211 mi (340 km) to the eastern directions from the volcano on May 06-07. A thermal anomaly was registering over the volcano on these days.

BEZYMIANNY VOLCANO (1000-25)

Effusion of viscous lava flow at the dome slope continues. Small ash plumes from hot avalanches is possible. Ash and aerosol plumes could affect low-flying aircraft.

Seismic activity does not exceed background levels on May 05 and 11, there was not seismic data due to technical reasons on the other days of week. According to visual data, moderate gas-steam activity was observing on May 07; clouds obscured the volcano on the other days of week. According to satellite data, a thermal anomaly over the lava dome was registering on May 06-08.

GORELY VOLCANO (1000-07)

Seismic and thermal activity of the volcano remains high. This ongoing unrest may eventually lead to an explosive eruption. Aerosol plumes from the volcano could affect low-flying aircraft.

Moderate seismic activity of the volcano continues and weak volcanic tremor was registered at the volcano all week. According to visual and satellite data, the volcano was quiet or obscured by clouds this week.

The KVERT Project is a non-commercial cooperative program of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO, USA), the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS and the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey (KB GS) RAS (Russia) since 1993. KVERT staff is available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST or KDT) and by phone during the evenings. KVERT uses daily satellite imagery, information from remote scientific observation stations, real-time seismic data for 11 volcanoes, and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanoes.
