VONA/Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity
Issued: 20110614/0330Z
VOLCANO: KIZIMEN (1000-23)
Current AVIATION COLOR CODE: ORANGE
Previous AVIATION COLOR CODE:RED
Source: KVERT
Notice Number: 36-11
Volcano Location: 55°08'N, 160°19'E;
Area: Kamchatka, Russia
Summit Elevation: 8151 ft (2485 m)
Prognosis Volcanic Activity: Seismic activity of the volcano continues. Strong ash explosions up to 49,200-32,800 ft (15-10 km) ASL could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.
Volcanic Activity Summary: Seismic activity of the volcano decreased significantly from 11:00 June 13. A magnitude of volcanic tremor in the area of Kizimen was very high from 04:00 till 07:00 UTC on June 13. It decreased significantly from 11:00 UTC on June 13, and remains the same for this time. According to satellite data, a big pyroclastic flow deposits is noting at the north-eastern flank of Kizimen volcano (an result of explosive activity on June 11-13). Ash plume extending about 16 mi to the south from the volcano was noted at 21:41 UTC on June 14. A big bright thermal anomaly continues to registering over the volcano.
As is well known, all Strong explosive events (and catastrophic too) are occurring on a slump of seismicity. A danger of strong explosive eruption of Kizimen remains.
Volcanic cloud height: Puff (AVO) says around 4-6 km ASL at 21:41 UTC on June 14
Other volcanic cloud information: No
Remarks: History of Kizimen eruptions is unknown. We have incomplete data about
only one eruption in 1928-1929 which were likely moderate explosive (or
explosive-effusive) events. Tephrachronological data point out several
catastrophic eruptions in evolution of this volcano.

The KVERT Project is a non-commercial cooperative program of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO, USA), the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS and the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey (KB GS) RAS (Russia) since 1993. KVERT staff is available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST or KDT) and by phone during the evenings. KVERT uses daily satellite imagery, information from remote scientific observation stations, real-time seismic data for 11 volcanoes, and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanoes.
