KVERT scientists examined satellite information each day to look for evidence of volcanic unrest since 2002. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation.
KIZIMEN VOLCANO (1000-23)
55°08'N, 160°19'E; Elevation 8,151 ft (2,485 m)
CURRENT AVIATION COLOR CODE IS ORANGE
Activity of the volcano is increasing. Strong ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) ASL could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.
Seismic activity of the volcano continues to increase: a magnitude of volcanic tremor continues to increase; about one thousand volcanic earthquakes are registering each day. According to video data, a new long fissure was noting at the top of the volcano last week; strong fumarole activity was observing all week. The lava flow continues to moving on the eastern flank of the volcano. A big thermal anomaly was registering over the volcano all week at satellite images. Gas-steam plumes extending about 37 mi (60 km) to the eastern directions from the volcano were noted on August 26 and 29, on satellite images.

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO (1000-27)
56°38'N, 161°19'E; Elevation 3,283 m, the dome elevation ~8,200 ft

AVIATION COLOR CODE IS ORANGE
Explosive-extrusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) ASL could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.
Moderate seismic activity of the volcano continues. According to seismic data, probably ash plumes rose up to 28,200 ft (8.6 km) ASL on August 28. According to visual data, ash plumes rose up to 19,700 ft (6.0 km) ASL on August 28; moderate fumarole activity was observing on August 26, 28, 30-31; clouds obscured the volcano on the other days of week. A thermal anomaly was registering over the volcano on August 29 and 31, at satellite images.

Explosive activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) ASL could occur at any time. Activity of the volcano could affect low-flying aircraft.
Moderate seismic activity of the volcano continues; according to seismic data, possible ash plumes rose up to 9,840 ft (3.0 km) ASL all week. A thermal anomaly was registering over the volcano on August 26 and 29-30; gas-steam plumes containing ash extending about 25 mi (40 km) to the east from the volcano on August 26 and 29.

Effusion of viscous lava flow at the dome slope continues. Small ash plumes from hot avalanches is possible. Ash and aerosol plumes could affect low-flying aircraft.
Seismic activity was very low all week. According to video data, moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano was observing on August 26, 28 and 30-31. According to satellite data, a weak thermal anomaly was registering over the volcano on August 28-29 and 31.

GORELY VOLCANO (1000-07)

AVIATION COLOR CODE IS YELLOW
Seismic and thermal activity of the volcano remains high. This ongoing
unrest may eventually lead to an explosive eruption. Aerosol plumes
from the volcano could affect low-flying aircraft.
Moderate seismic activity of the volcano continues and a volcanic tremor was registering at the volcano all week. Moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano was observing all week. According to satellite data, a thermal anomaly was registering over the volcano on August 26 and 29.

The KVERT Project is a cooperative program of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS and the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey (KB GS) RAS since 1993. KVERT scientists is available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST) and by phone during the evenings. KVERT uses daily satellite imagery, information from remote scientific observation stations, real-time seismic data for 11 volcanoes, and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanoes.
