VONA/Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity

Issued:
20120322/2315Z

VOLCANO:
KIZIMEN (1000-23)

Current AVIATION COLOR CODE: YELLOW
Previous AVIATION COLOR CODE: ORANGE

Source:
KVERT

Notice Number:
22-12

Volcano Location:
55°08'N, 160°19'E;
Area:
Kamchatka, Russia
Summit Elevation:
8151 ft (2485 m)

Prognosis Volcanic Activity:
Effusive eruption of the volcano continues: the large lava flow effuses on the eastern volcanic flank. Strong gas-steam volcanic activity and moderate hot avalanches accompanies this process. Aerosolic plumes, and small ash plumes from hot avalanches could affect low-flying aircraft.

Volcanic Activity Summary: Moderate seismic activity of the volcano continues. Video data and satellite imagery showed that the lava flow continues to effusing on the eastern volcanic flank. Hot avalanches accompany the lava flow effusion. Strong gas-steam activity of the volcano at video camera and a big thermal anomaly at satellite images were noting all week.

Volcanic cloud height: NO ASH CLOUD PRODUCED

Other volcanic cloud information:
NO ASH CLOUD PRODUCED

Remarks: Eruption of Kizimen volcano began on December 09, 2010, and continues. There are several stages of the eruption: Explosive (from 09 December 2010 to mid-January 2011); explosive-effusive (mid-January to mid-June 2011); effusive(mid-January 2011 to present).

The KVERT Project is a cooperative program of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS and the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey (KB GS) RAS since 1993. KVERT scientists was available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST) 7 days in week in 2005-2011. Now KVERT scientists is available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST) in the work days and by phone during the evenings. KVERT (IVS) analyses daily satellite imagery; information from remote scientific observation stations; real-time seismic data for 11 Kamchatkan volcanoes (data from KBGS RAS); and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanoes.
